Curse of Strahd, Session I

My friend Wulf is running the 5th Edition D&D adventure Curse of Strahd over Discord. Note that this first session is quite short and uneventful; it is really more of a session 0, as most of it was spent on character creation. Keep in mind also that, according to him, Wulf has made significant changes to the contents of the adventure.

Werewolves were harassing travelers outside the town of Daggerford. This was a lamentable situation, as the Zhentarim had invested heavily in the region and the werewolf attacks were cutting into Zhentish profits. So, Darkhold dispatched two trusted agents - the dark knight Boldrick "Main Man" Tanners and the young necromancer Corwin Orfen - to drive off the lycanthropes.

They arrived in Darkhold late in the afternoon and immediately rendezvoused with their local contact, one Davra Jasour, at the Lady Luck Tavern.

She explained that the werewolves were not only attacking travelers, but kidnapping many of them as well. They were also behaving in a far more organized manner than was usual for their type. The monsters were operating out of the nearby Misty Woods. Should the two Zhents defeat the werewolves, they would be paid 2,000 gold coins and an unspecified favor.

The deal was struck. Then, Boldrick and Corwin decided to turn in for the night, intending to head out for Misty Woods in the morning. However, loud talking in the tavern kept Corwin up, so he decided to stay up late and have a drink.

In the tavern, a strange elf was making an announcement to anyone who would listen. His name was Novem, and he represented something called the Legion of One. His organization had sent him to save the Daggerford region from the werewolf menace, and he was inviting willing volunteers to join him. Anyone who helped would be rewarded by the Legion of One.

Corwin, of course, acted like he and his colleague weren't already in town to kill the werewolves, and agreed to help Novem on "his" mission. He and Novem drank together and discussed the matter. Over the course of this conversation, Corwin tried to suss out exactly what the Legion of One was, but the answers Novem provided served only to bring up more questions. Apparently the Legion were all clones, or something like that, of their commander-in-chief. Each was telepathically linked to all the others. They were loyal only to the One of whom they were copies. Novem claimed to have no knowledge of the One's agenda. He merely followed the One's orders without question.
